Real Madrid are continuing their shopping spree in the transfer window, with Fabio Coentrao being the latest addition into the Bernabeu’s endless array of stars. The Benfica full-back’s transfer has been in the process for quite a while now, with talks breaking down frequently over the past month.
The fee for the Portuguese star is €30 million. SL Benfica released a statement which confirmed that a fee had been agreed and that the deal would be formally through after Coentrao undergoes his medical at the Capital’s club.
“Sport Lisboa e Benfica, in agreement with the terms of article 248 of the stock market values code, informs that it has reached an agreement in principle with Real Madrid CF for the complete transfer, total sporting and economic rights of the athlete Fabio Coentrao for the value of €30m.”
“The aforementioned agreement will be formalised as soon as the player concludes the medical examinations he will be undertaking with the consent of Sport Lisboa e Benfica, and a working contract between the player and Real Madrid FC agreed.”
With Marcelo showing lot of promise in both attacking and defensive positions, Real Madrid once again seem to have indulged in a transfer just to prove that they can. In a squad whose bench strength in itself is quite intimidating (which sadly also includes Kaka’), Coentrao is unlikely to break into first team action immediately.
