An announcement made said that the IPL would not happen behind closed doors anymore. Fans will be back in the stadium to witness the UAE leg of the competition. However, the fans will not be at full capacity but only in ‘limited capacity.’ IPL media advisory released a statement quoting that fans will witness all the action from proximity.
IPL fans are more than delighted to learn that BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has fixed the remaining part of the IPL 2021 season after suspension in May due to COVID-19.
When will it resume?
Many IPL fans have been asking when the IPL is going to resume. Well, the good news is that the premier league continues on September 19 to complete the remaining portion of the 2021 season. After being suspended for several months, the first match is set to take place in UAE. News about the resumption of the IPL in UAE in September was confirmed on Twitter by ANI Digital. Since the news came in, netizens are reacting to the announcement, especially the IPL fans.
IPL Resumption in September
A BCCI official said that discussions were fruitful between the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) and the BCCI. They told ANI that the ECB gave them the go-ahead to host the IPL ahead of the BCCI SGM. While talking about the games and the resumption of the IPL, the official noted that the first game would happen on September 19, and the final would be on October 15. The official pointed out that the BCCI wanted to have a 25-day window to complete the remaining matches of the 2021 season.
Availability of foreign players
The official also commented on the availability of foreign players for the remaining part of the season. He said discussions are underway and that they hope all the foreign players who play in the IPL will be available for resumption. According to the official, if several players fail to turn up for the tournament, the BCCI will decide the next course of action. The officials and fans hope to have an entertaining and thrilling 14th edition of the IPL.
When is the 2021 final from the latest update?
ANI Digital said on Twitter that as of now, the final would take place on October 15. If all goes well, that is when the final is to happen. The last game was on May 2 between the Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings before the officials postponed the IPL on May 4.
Teams to Struggle due to Shifting to UAE Grounds
Deliberations by the BCCI had the remaining matches of the IPL 2021 season scheduled in the UAE and not in India because of the monsoon season. IPL 2020 happened in UAE with no interruptions at all. Pitches in UAE are far much better than those in India. That is why moving the remaining matches of IPL to UAE might not be that favourable to some teams. Below are some teams that might struggle after the resumption of the IPL:
Rajasthan Royals
This team might not be happy with the shift of the Indian Premier League to the UAE. The former champions had a rather lousy season last year. Despite having several wins in the initial stages of the competition, RR failed to make it through in the UAE.
Their key players will also be missing in action, such as Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler. Archer was a key performer in the Rajasthan-based franchise taking 20 wickets from 14 games. RR has a lot to think about on the resumption of the IPL in the UAE.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata knight riders had an average season last year in UAE. They finished fifth and managed seven wins. Everyone expected the team to improve significantly in the 14th edition of the competition, but underwhelming performances and poor captaincy failed the team.
Before the suspension of the league, KKR was seventh in the table from only two wins. The team had played seven games before the break. To add to their misery, Pat Cummins, their Australian pacer, pulled out and will not show up for the remainder of the season. Eoin Morgan, KKR’s skipper, will also miss the return of the IPL in UAE due to national duties. KKR’s West Indian stalwart might also not be available (Andre Russell) since the Caribbean Premier League starts on August 28, with the final taking place on September 19. With uncertainty lurking over KKR top players such as Cummins, Rusell and Morgan, the team may not make it as the IPL resumes in UAE.
