The stage is set for the mouth-watering and nail-biting clash of the two Tennis stalwarts of the current era; Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka. This will be the ultimate finale, and the winner will get on to hold the prestigious Roland Garros trophy.
Both Nadal and Wawrinka are positioned pretty close at the latest WTA ranking with the Spaniard at fourth while the Swiss at third spot respectively. Tennis ace Nadal is playing his 10th final at the French Open and is undoubtedly, playing best these days.
His thumping victory over Dominic Thiem with a convincing 6-3, 6-4 and 6-0 at the semi-finals indicated that he preserved his best for the final. Likewise, Wawrinka also cruised into the finale after beating the World No 1 Andy Murray in a five-set series.
Rafael Nadal: Lots at stake
Nadal has a lot of things to achieve if he successfully defeats Wawrinka at the final. It will directly take Nadal into the league of extra ordinary tennis legends with 15 grand slams apart from becoming the only player in the history to have 10 titles at one Grand Slam.
However, thwarting Wawrinka’s magnificent backhand shot won’t be that much easy. Nadal has to use his iconic forehand clash forcefully to preempt the French’s any attempt to beat him.
In his recent interaction with the media, Nadal quoted, “For me, being in the final is always a very positive result. Now remains one match against a very tough opponent, so he will be full of confidence for Sunday. And he’s a very dangerous player because he can hit the ball very hard. I need to play aggressive, I need to play long, I need to try to not let him play from easy positions. If not, I’m going to be in big trouble. Stopping him can be difficult”.
Stan Wawrinka: Eyeing for the title
Stan Wawrinka is set to beat Nadal in the final of the ongoing Roland Garros championship. In the semifinals match played yesterday, the 32-year-old beat the top seeded Andy Murray in a five-set series 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 5-7 7-6 (7-3) 6-1. He has also won the 2015 French Open and 2016 US Open as well. Certainly, Wawrinka Vs Nadal is going to be the battle of two Tennis goliaths at loggerheads against each other.
“To play Rafa on clay in the final of the French Open is probably the biggest challenge you can have in tennis. He’s the best player ever on clay. He’s going for his 10th Roland Garros, so it’s something really impressive, something tough,” Wawrinka stated to media a few hours back.
