New Delhi, January 16, 2017: Indian women boxers started off 2017 on a high with scintillating performances at the season-opening Nations Cup in Serbia. The 6th Nations Cup saw participation from 18 countries wherein India had sent a 10 member squad led by newly appointed coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu, former Men’s Coach.
Reigning national champion Neeraj (51kg) pinned Gold while former World Championships silver-medallist Sarjubala Devi (48kg), Priyanka Chaudhry (60kg), Pooja (69kg), and Seema Poonia (+81kg) bagged silver medals after losing their respective summit clashes.
Former Asian Games bronze-medallist Kavita Goyat (75kg), who lost her semifinal contest owing to a knee injury settled for bronze making India finish 3rd overall with six medals at the 6th Nations Cup.
Speaking at the tremendous victory, chief coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu said, “Each one of them has made the country proud. With less than a month’s training, the results shown by girls is splendid.”
Congratulating the girls, BFI President Shri Ajay Singh said, “We are delighted with the performances that the girls have given. This victory is a testimony that Indian boxing is back in the sports arena and is dedicated to championing brilliance in times to come. I congratulate the women’s team on this success and look forward to seeing more evolution in the Indian boxing horizon.”
Boxing Federation of India will be inaugurating its 1st Youth National Boxing Championship for Men and Women in the capital from today.
