Whether you’re a tennis fan or not, it’s impossible not to admire the sublime skills on display at the HCL Tennis Junior Tour.
And while we marvel at the skills on display, few really understand how these players attain such a level of expertise. One thing we do know is that they all start at a very young age.
The HCL Tennis Junior Tour – national level competition, began in Chennai on the 30th of August 2016 and subsequently travelled to Kolkata, Lucknow and culminated in Pune. It was organized under the aegis of All India Tennis Association (AITA), with support from the respective state tennis associations and Mahesh Bhupathi Tennis Academies (MBTA) as the knowledge partner.
With this tournament, HCL Enterprise, in association with Mahesh Bhupathi Tennis Academies, is offering a platform to young tennis players at the grassroot-level with proper training & financial support and giving them a golden opportunity to showcase their talent.
Speaking on the initiative, Sundar Mahalingam, Chief Strategy Officer, HCL Corporation said, “At HCL our philosophy is to ‘touch lives’ and this is also at the heart of our sports initiatives. With the HCL Junior Tour and Masters, we are nurturing talented young players in the country and our association with AITA this year will ensure that the performance of these players counts in their rankings nationally.”
With the culmination of the HCL Tennis Junior Tour, the attention will move on to the next phase at HCL Tennis Junior Masters, 16 players in the Singles category (across the U12 and U14 for boys and girls respectively) will compete in the HCL Tennis Junior Masters at the Shiv Nadar University, Greater Noida from November 21 – 25, 2016. 14 of these will be selected on the basis of the AITA points collected through the tour, while two winners will be selected from the “Plate events”.
The Masters will follow a knockout format and the winners in both U12 and U14 categories will be sent to a fully sponsored training session for one week to the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy in Spain. The runners-up will be sent to Mahesh Bhupathi Tennis Academy’s high-performance center in Kochi for an all-expenses paid two week training program.
HCL Tennis is doing a lot to help foster and nurture young talent in this country. Who knows, we might even see a young Indian playing in one of the Grand Slams – Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open in the not-too-distant future.
