With the aim to give fillip to cricket in Uttar Pradesh, the Akhilesh Yadav government handed over the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur to the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA). Lucknow is all set to get a state-of-the art International Cricket Stadium and very soon, International and National level matches will be held at this Stadium.
Green Park Cricket Stadium boasting world-class facilities in Kanpur built by the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) is all set to host two Indian Premier League (IPL) matches on May 19 and 21. The floodlights at the Green Park are being installed while other nitty gitty are being taken care off. The BCCI team is satisfied with the condition of pitch and stadium.
The stadium has a seating capacity of around 33,000. Green Park is the only stadium in India to have a Students Gallery and has the largest manually operated scoreboard in the world.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, an ardent sports lover, is making all efforts to improve sports infrastructure and facilities in the state and bring Uttar Pradesh on top in the sports arena.
The Gujarat Lions, have made Kanpur as their second home ground after Rajkot. The ninth edition of IPL started on April 9 and it will be the first time that Green Park in Kanpur will host IPL matches. The city, in all likelihood, would host two matches between Gujarat Lions (GL) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on 19 May and between Gujarat Lions (GL) vs Mumbai Indians (MI) on 21 May.
There appeared to be a lot of excitement amongst IPL fans in Kanpur to watch two days of exciting cricket. Notably, Kanpur’s Green Park stadium had recently hosted the India-South Africa ODI after a long gap.
The IPL is today, India’s most profitable and popular sporting league and has generated employment and revenues for upcoming athletes, players, sporting associations, companies and all stakeholders. The successful hosting of the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur embodies the emergence of sports as an industry that promotes economic development and job creation in the state.
Cricket will be given a boost in all districts of the state to encourage young talent to come forward and blossom at the national level.
