Kimi Raikkonen, in his Ferrari tested the new canopy design on the third day of the second pre-season test. This was the first time any Formula One car came up with this design after the much discussed concept came up in front of the F1 management and FIA.
A surprise by all means, the unveiling of the canopy design by Ferrari is a sign that the design is well on its way to get nods from all the required departments. The concept is already at an advanced stage and has gone beyond the drawing board.
Drivers as well as the teams have taken this introduction of design as an improvement over the previous halo design. Raikkoken completed few laps initially with the new design. Later however, he was seen testing without the protective cover.
“The first impression on the visibility test is positive. The structure does not hamper visibility”, said Kimi after the drive. Ferrari was keen to get a driver’s perspective on how the contraption would hamper the driver comfort and visibility.
FIA is currently looking into the safety aspect of the design and also concerned with the visibility aspect. With this test conducted by Ferrari, the team has said that the visibility aspect was “ok” and more tests might be planned in the future.
