Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have clinched another win on Friday, picking up the women’s double title at the Rod Laver Arena. This is their third Grand Slam win in a row after winning the 2015 Wimbledon and 2015 US Open titles.
The word number no. 1 women’s pair beat the world no. 7 team of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 7-6 (7-1), 6-3. The formidable paring of the Swiss-Indian tennis sensation has extended their unbeaten run to 36 games with this win. The previous instant they had lost a match was in Cincinnati Masters, before the US Open, last year. This is their eighth successive title and 12th overall since the time they played as a team.
Each point was contested well between the teams and the match was an interesting fight to witness for the crowd. The first set went into a thrilling tie-break with Sania-Hingis winning rather comfortably at 7-1. They carried forward the momentum into the second set and were leading 2-0 at a point. The Czech pair refused to bow down without a fight and made a fighting comeback to bring the set score to 5-3, before finally losing out.
Sania after the fantastic win said, “It was a great atmosphere to play. We had a lot of fun. For me, Australian Open is very special. It is as close as home to me. So thanks everyone. Thanks for making it one of the best slams of the year”. She went on to praise her partner, Hingis, saying, “Thank you partner. We have had a great last year. We just keep going on and on. She is an amazing person and it is amazing to play with her”.
