Cricket, a legacy of commonwealth nations, would soon make it to the list of global game as far as its shortest format is cricket. Former Aussie speedster, Glenn McGrath explained to the media that T20 cricket has the potential to bring several people from different walks of life to a single platter. Even a person who doesn’t watch the game can still enjoy T20 cricket.
The former Kangaroo right-arm-fast, also known as pigeon, exclaimed that T20 can truly make cricket a worldwide game. Thanks to the effort of Asian Diasporas in several countries, including Canada and the US that Cricket is somewhat familiar to the people living there. Last year, the US organized several T20 matches on its newly renovated pitches exclusive for cricket.
In recent times cricket has reached several nook and corners of the world, but that is still far from being satisfactory. A lot of countries are still oblivious about the game. Apart from England, no other European nations participate in international cricket. Similarly, in Asia, only India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka play the game. In fact, a total of only 10 nations play international test cricket these days.
Extreme popularity of T20 cricket on one hand and lack of fans’ interest in test matches on the other doesn’t bother the Pigeon too much. “I think the (cricket) boards hold Test cricket in high regard and the players do. I am pretty confident (of its health) as long as we don’t start playing too much T20 and too less Test matches”, he cautioned and also added that as of now the longevity of Test cricket is in no danger. “I am happy with where it (Test cricket) is at the moment. People are coming to enjoy, players too and there are plenty of sponsors. The brand of Test cricket is still successful and quite strong”, the 45-year-old said.
Australia will defeat England 5-0 in Ashes Series
Australia and England will play Ashes test series soon. The legendary fast bowler predicted that the Kangaroo team will defeat England 5-0 in the upcoming Ashes tour. Such a comment would definitely lead to some discomfort in the English dressing room. Notwithstanding the fact that there is a dip in England’s performance in international matches since Cricket Word Cup 2015, held in February-March earlier this year.
Glenn McGrath is currently in Mumbai for a brand promotion purpose. He is all set to be seen as a commentator for the hugely anticipated England versus Australia Ashes series. It would be interesting to see whether his prophecy of England’s 5-0 clean-sweep at the hand of Australia becomes true or remains just a hyperbole.
