His flawless one handed backhand always stood out in the Tennis world. His preferred clay surface won him his first French Open at the Roland Garros. At the age of 30, Stansilas Wawrinka played his best to ousted World number One Novak Djokovic.
Stansilas Warinka, popular as ‘Stan’ defeated world number one Novak Djokovic with an impeccable display of shots at the Rolland Garros final by 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, and 6-4 this Sunday. This is his first Grand slam win in Paris and careers second Grand slam just after winning the Australian Open a year ago in 2014. Chances of Novak Djokovic to continue his 28 match winning streak were high on Sunday but ‘Stan’ didn’t leave any ground for mistake especially after losing the first set. “I would like to thank my coach Magnus Norman. You played in the final without winning but this victory is yours as well as mine” He said.
Stan Wawrinka is the only second Swiss to win at Roland Garros after Roger Federer, the man he beat in the quarter-finals. He served total nine fabulous aces in the finals. After his victory at the French Open finals, Roger Federer tweeted “CHAMP @stanwawrinka” whereas Novak Djokovic tweeted, “Thank u all for believing in me and cheering for me. Congrats @stanwawrinka on an amazing performance! Well deserved.” Before making it to the finals he shattered Jo-Wilfred Tsongas dream in the semi-finals to make it to the finals and won by 6-3, 6-7 (1/7), 7-6 (7/3), 6-4. The last Frenchmen to reach the final of the French Open was was Henri Leconte in 1988.
He is a father of one daughter ‘Alexia’ and was married to his wife Ilham Vuilloud who is a Swiss television presenter and a former model. Their marriage took place on 15 December 2009. Beginning to play Tennis at the age of eight, Stan has always ensued to achieve a feat in this sport. When he had defeated Rafael Nadal in the 2014 Australian Open, it was his first win in the last 13th attempts! With this victory he achieved his career best ranking of world number three.
This wasn’t the first time he was facing Novak Djokovic. He had won against Novak at the July 2006 Croatia Open and achieved his first ATP title. In another tournament he had lost to him in the Masters Series event at Rome in the year 2008. When Stan defeated ace player Roger Federer to reach the semi-finals of the 2015 French Open, it was a significant mark achieved by him. That match had raised eyebrows and people’s expectations were peaked high.
With this win, Wawrinka has gained points which have elevated his ranking to no: 05, while Novak continues to top the ATP ranking. Stan Wawrinka is the new Star Wawrinka in the Tennis world!
