Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg will look to secure a coveted Formula One Monaco hat-trick wins, come next weekend. The championship boosting win that he secured in the last race at Spanish Grand Prix will perhaps give him the confidence and the momentum to secure another win in this season.
The 29-year old German has been over shadowed by his team mate Lewis Hamilton since the clinching finale last year which saw Nico Rosberg lose out on the driver championship title in the last race. A repeat of his dominating weekend at Spain, at Monte Carlo will reinstate his form and also add his name to a revered list of Monaco hat trick winners.
Three time world champion and racing legend, Ayrton Senna won six races with five successive wins at Monaco from 1989-93. His arch rival, Alan Prost has won thrice at Monaco in a row from 1984 to 1986 and then once more in 1988. Graham Hill, a Briton was the first to have achieved this feat of winning at Monaco thrice from 1963 to 1965.
Rosberg will be catapulted into the league of the great racers if he wins the next race. In fact the great Michael Schumacher has won five times at Monaco but never could he manage three times in a row. Nico is currently only 20 points away from Lewis Hamilton and a win in this race will see him close that gap further.
Ferrari and specifically, Sebastian Vettel is perhaps the stiffest competition Nico faces apart from his team mate. Monaco is a slow twisty circuit and that will mean that tyre and aerodynamic package will be more important than straight line speed. Ferrari cars have a good race pace and have been known to do well in tougher race conditions.
Hamilton however is keen to go back to his winning ways. “I am more than ever looking forward to this one, I really am”, he said, “I know that I can rectify things in the next race, which I plan to do, I’ve not won in Monaco for a long long time; I’ve only wont it once- so this is going to be my third chance with this great team with a great car. So hopefully third time lucky”.
Hamilton’s only win came way back in 2008 with McLaren in his first ever title winning season. Hamilton has never been comfortable racing at Monaco so Nico Rosberg has a good chance to set up his name amongst the greats while Hamilton will have to pull out something extra for a win at the Monaco Grand Prix.
