Top seed Novak Djokovic won his fourth Italian Open title after beating Roger Federer comprehensively in straight sets. The Serb played a flawless final against the class of Federer to win 6-4 6-3.
The king of clay and seven time champion, Rafael Nadal was out in the quarter finals after a poor run which meant that the two legends of Djokovic and Federer had to fight it out for the title on Sunday. Djokovic is currently in the form of his life taking his winning streak to 22 matches. “The fact I’ve managed to win that many matches in a row, gives me a reason to believe that I can do it again”, said Djokovic., “I will keep going as long as I can, hopefully its gonna take me as far as Roland Garros. It is and has been the priority of my career”.
Federer looked out of form as he made more unforced errors and was not able to match up to the level of his opponent. Djokovic’s precision, power and pace elevated him to a different level of performance. He sealed the final in just 76 minutes as Federer admitted that Djokovic was simply too strong on the day.
The Swiss tennis legend, had made a last minute decision to play the tournament which he set to skip initially. The reason might be to be prepared and get match practise for the upcoming French Open in Paris.
Roger Federer said, “It is a bit frustrating but in general I am satisfied with my performance. I played a good match but Novak was just a bit stronger than me”. He added, “Physicallly I know I am in good form and I hope that I give myself the chance to play better there than I have in recent years”.
Djokovic might be a pro on the court but he almost lost an eye while un-corking a Champagne bottle to celebrate his Italian Open win. The world Number one held the bottle close to his chest and looked over the bottle while un-corking. The cork suddenly flew off and hit his forehead missing his left eye by millimetres.
Djokovic about the French Open commented, “This is the best season of my life. I do not know how it will go at Roland Garros but I am very confident. I am playing great joy and concentration and I hope to continue”.
