Tennis sensation Sania Mirza won the Miami Open title in the women’s double category. Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis made a cautious start in the final but slowly consolidated their position as the day progressed at the Miami Open final against the Russian pair.

The top-seeded duo was fighting against Makerova and Vesnina at the title clash. Indo-Swiss pair ensured victory in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 to clinch the trophy. This victory put Sania on top of the ranking of women tennis player from India. The-28-year-old is now just few points away from reaching the world’s number one spot in Doubles Rankings.

Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza are a great team to pair. They have also won Indian Wells – their first title together a few months back. This was Sania’s 25th WTA title while the 34-year-old‘s 43rd doubles title. Top seeded India’s Tennis player posted a photo of the trophy on social media after winning the title. The picture shows Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis jointly clasping the Miami Open title. Congratulatory messages started pouring in once this news was flashed on social and mainstream media.

  2. Runner-up at the 2011 French Open at the Grand Slams final in Women’s Double category.
  3. Winner of 3 Mixed Doubles (pairing twice with Mahesh Bhupathi) in Australian Open 2009 and French Open 2012. The Hyderabadi player also won 1 US Open Mixed Double title partnering with Bruno Soare in 2014.
  4. Winner of Indian Wells championship 2015 in Women’s double category partnering with Martina Hingis.
  5. Winner of Miami Open Championship (Women’s Double) 2015 teaming with Martina Hingis.
  6. Gold Medal winner at the 2014 Asian Games held in Incheon at the Mixed Doubles category.
  7. She is appointed as the UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia.

This victory will definitely boost the morale of the India tennis star to bring more laurels to the nation in the near future. Sania’s career took a dramatic turn in the later years of 2007 when she was forced to opt out of singles matches due to a major wrist injury. Since then the tennis icon zeroed in on the doubles matches.
As of now, Sania Mirza is placed at her career best ranking of 3 in the Doubles ranking. She is the first Indian woman to reach such a high rank in Tennis.
