Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has added one more feather in his cap today in Shanghai, when he was inducted into the prestigious Laureus Sports Academy. He is only the third Indian in the history to accomplish the feat. Only Kapil Dev and Rahul Dravid have been inducted into the academy in the past.
This year there will be some intense contest between various sportsman and sportswoman for the top award in their respective category. The nominees for Laureus World Sports Award for best Sportsman of the year award are Novak Djokovic, Renaud Lavillenie, Cristiano Ronaldo , Lewis Hamilton and Rory Mcllroy.
Similarly, in the women’s category Serena Williams, Marit Bjorgen, Tina Maze, Valerie Adams and Genzebe Dibaba are the nominees for Laureus World Sports Award for best Sportswoman of the year award.
Sachin Tendulkar went to Shanghai for this purpose and posted some pictures on his twitter page straight from the Chinese metropolitan city. The former Indian test skipper also asked the youths to engage themselves in sports to stay healthier and fitter. He is very enthusiast and pleased on being inducted as a new member of the Academy. The officials announced the induction of Tendulkar and Yao Ming (Retired Chinese Basketball Player) on social media a few hours back.
Apart from Sachin and Ming, few other top-notch sportspersons including Tegla Loroupe (Kenyan long-distance runner), Li Xiaopeng (Chinese athlete) and Yang Yang (Chinese Skater) were also inducted into the academy at the said event.
The Laureus World Sports Award: A Brief Introduction
This yearly award is considered to be one of the most prestigious awards in the realm of sports in contemporary times. It aimed at recognizing the achievement of sportspersons all across the globe. The anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela was the first patron of the award.
The aim of the Laureus foundation is to assist underprivileged people throughout the globe and helps combat them various challenges, including homelessness, drug abuse, war, discrimination and many more. A large of projects is undertaken by the organization to spread the message of humanity through sports. Daimler and Richemont have launched the Laureus World Sports Awards in the year 2000. Since then its glorious legacy continues.
As per the latest media reports the winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards 2015 are;
1) Novak Djokovik – The Sportsman of the year
2) Genzebe Dibaba – The Sportswoman of the year
3) Germany – National Football team of the year
4) Yao Ming – The spirit of the sports award
5) Li Na – Exceptional achievement award
