India beat Bangladesh by 109 runs at the scenic MCG in Melbourne in presence of a massive crowd at the Quarter Final clash of the ongoing Cricket World Cup. This victory took the invincible men-in-blue into the semis straightaway. The winner of tomorrow’s quarter final match against Pakistan and Australia will take on India at the 2nd Semi Final to be held next Thursday in Sydney.
Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first. Captain cool usually doesn’t take too many chances in important clashes since fans have overwhelming expectations from the Indian cricket team. India continued with the winning combination and Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma came to begin India’s inning.
The left handed opener Shikhar Shawan played a patient knock of 30 (50b, 4sx3), while Rohit Sharma was striking the balls well. Bangladesh got the breakthrough at the 17th over when senior all-rounder Shakib Al Hassan dismissed Dhawan stumped out by Mushfiqur Rahim. India lost their first wicket at 75/1. Virat Kohli (3) also could not stay for long and was dismissed caught out soon.
Rahane added 36-run partnership for the third wicket with Rohit Sharma. The stylish right handed batsman was dismissed caught out off T. Ahmed at 28th over. Explosive Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma put a 122-run partnership that helped India score more than 300.
The gritty left hander scored a brilliant 65 (57b, 4sx7, 6sx1) and took off the pressure from the opener. The talented right handed batsman was seemed to be in perfect control today. He scored his seventh ODI ton in 108 deliveries with a couple off Mortaza at the 42nd over.
Rohit Sharma went on to score his next 37 runs off just 28 deliveries. Unfortunately he was bowled out by T.Ahmed on 137 with 14 boundaries and 3 sixes. Eventually team India put a 302/6 on the scoreboard after 50th over. Ravindra Jadeja 23* and Ashwin 3* remained unbeaten. Ahmed picked up three important wickets of Dhoni (6), Rahane (19) and Rohit Sharma (137) at the end of his bowling spell.
It was definitely a big total and Bangladesh seemed completely out of race from the very beginning of their batting. Umesh Yadav produced a brilliant spell (9-1-31-4) and kept creating pressure for the batsmen. He dismissed opener T. Iqbal (25) at the 7th over. In no time Kayees (5) was also dismissed run out, courtesy Ravindra Jadeja’s excellent fielding.
Bangladesh were soon reduced to 139/6 but some late attempts by Nasir Hossain (35) and Sabbir Rahman (30) helped the team reach close to two hundred although for a losing cause. The duo added 50-run stand between them only to lower the margin of their defeat. The Bengal tigers were bowled out for 193 only. Mohammad Shammi (8-1-37-2) and Ravindra Jadeja (8-0-42-2) shared 4 wickets between them, apart from Umesh Yadav’s 4-Wicket haul. Rohit Sharma was awarded Man-of-The-Match award for his stunning century.
