Dhoni is on a roll. After becoming the most successful Indian test captain and retiring from the format of the game now he has become the most successful Indian captain at the World Cup Tournament.
After beating Ireland by 8 wickets and securing the top spot in Group B, Dhoni has captained India to 9 consecutive World Cup game wins equaling Clive Lyod’s record and bettering the 8 under Sourav Ganguly. Ricky Pointing however holds the maximum number of consecutive wins in a World Cup by a large margin of 24 games. Dhoni has also led India to 12 wins; maximum by an Indian skipper overtaking Kapil Dev’s record of 11.
After a poor performance in the tri-series many questions were raised about the fitness levels of certain players and the captaincy of Dhoni. Dhoni has also stuck with his players and given them support while they faced criticism from the people and media back home. All critics have been answered and all doubts cleared by Dhoni by display of great cricket and clinching some good wins.
Shikhar Dhawan who was heavily criticised has turned out to be a gem for India in this World Cup. He is now the first Indian batsman to score a World Cup ton in New Zealand and the first Indian to get a World Cup century in both Australia and New Zealand. Shikhar Dhawan’s 100 and Rohit Sharma’s 64 partnership of 174 is the highest opening partnership for India in World Cup and also the highest for any wicket in World Cup games in New Zealand. India has won all the eight games when he has registered tons. Apart from Sachin, Dhawan is the only other Indian to have recorded two tons in the same World Cup Tournament. All this is because Dhoni had faith in his talent and kept him in the squad.
Ravi Shastri, Indian team Director has commented with full of zeal that India is well on course to lift the World Cup trophy for a second successive time. After the win over Ireland he said,” It is a good position to be in, especially given that from now on every game is a knockout. Once you start winning you feel relaxed, it is when you lose that you want to stay locked in the dressing room. Right now the team is enjoying , they are playing football, they are a happy unit. The bowlers deserve all the credit. 50 wickets in five matches is a wonderful achievement. It is also an interesting fact that India has bowled out its opponent in the last five ODIs, which is quite surprising knowing that none of the senior bowlers like Zahir Khan, Irfan Pathan or Ishant Sharma are included in the eleven.
Dhoni carries the hope of a billion Indians and he certainly has the mettle to bring back the trophy. Only time can tell if history actually does repeat itself.
