Former Indian test skipper Anil Kumble has been honored with the rare feat of being inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame at an official function held in Melbourne last week. No one could deny the fact that Anil Kumble has been a true match winner for India in both Tests and ODIs during his career. He has been a true fighter and one of the gentlest cricketers in the world of cricket.
Kumble is only the fourth Indian to be honored with such a prestigious recognition. Ex-cricketers like Bishen Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar have been bestowed with the same feat in the inaugural edition of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009. It is after a gap of 6 years that any Indian cricketer achieved the feat.
The 44-year-year old former leg-spinner is very much active in his administrative role and is currently the chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee. He is also a mentor for IPL team – Mumbai Indians. The illustrious career (1990-2008) of the googly bowler consisted of many memorable victories that he won for India.
Anil Kumble: The Jumbo Statistics
- He is the third highest wicket taker (619) in test cricket after Shane Warne (708) and Muttiah Muralitharan (800).
- Kumble is the fourth most capped test player (132) in India’s test cricket. Only Sachin Tendulkar (200), Rahul Dravid (164) and VVS Laxaman (134) have played more tests than him.
- Kumble took a gigantic 619 wickets from 132 tests. He got 5Wickets haul 35 times and 10Wickets haul 8 times in his career.
- The leg-spinner bowler was the leading wicket taker in the ICC Cricket World Cup 1996. He took 15 wickets from 7 matches for India.
- How can anyone forget his miraculous spell at historic Feroz Shah Kotla ground in Delhi? He claimed all 10 wickets of the Pakistan’s second innings and finished his spell at 10/74 (ten for seventy-four) in 1999. India won that match.
- Anil Kumble also picked up 337 Wickets out of 271 ODIs that he played in his career.
- The veteran cricketer is also the recipient of prestigious Padma Shri and Arjuna Award.
- Anil Kumble got the rare feat of scoring a century at Lords in England considered to be Mecca of Cricket as an Indian skipper.
- In his IPL career, he helped his team RCB reach final of the tournament in 2009 as a captain of the team.
