Former Indian test cricketer Bishen Singh Bedi has stated to the media in his recent interaction that the injury of some key players might affect India’s performance in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup. The legend felt that it would have been better if players had addressed their fitness issues a few days back.
India is going to play its warm-up match after a one or two days while the key injured players will also face the fitness test in the next few hours. Hence Bedi said that team India has taken the fitness issues of its cricketers too late. Most of Indian Cricketers (who will play the upcoming gala tournament) are in Australia for the last two months but somehow they are raising their injury concern only now.
The legendary off-spinner also praised the Sachin Tendulkar era when India had some of the world’s best batsmen in its squad such as Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly and the master blaster himself. They have contributed immensely to the Indian cricket worldwide and took the game forward from where Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar left since the 1990s era. For the next two decades they remained almost indispensable for the team. This is going to be the only world cup when Sachin Tendulkar would not be playing since 1992.
During the last world cup in 2011, India played their level best and most of the team members were in the best of their fitness but now the scene is pretty different. Some of India’s prominent cricketers including Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja will go through the fitness test tomorrow and only then their presence at the world cup will be determined.
The-68-year-old ace off-spinner opined that when the world cup is just round the corner Indian team is still yet to identify who are its core players at the gala tournament and this is certainly not a good idea. Bedi felt that the injury concerns of the cricketers should have been attended to earlier.
The veteran cricketer also suggested that India’s disastrous performance at the bilateral test series and followed with the tri-series in Australia is definitely going to be a matter of deep thought for the players and team management. Bedi also explained that India need to raise their self-esteem in order to start afresh at the ICC World Cup 2015. He also added that it is really very difficult to guess the winner of the trophy because most of the ICC top ranking nations are playing equally well at this point of time.
Bishen Singh Bedi is a former Indian spin wizard having participated in 67 tests and took 266 wickets. He also led India in 22 tests as captain of the Indian cricket team during his illustrious career.
