The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 has started a week back. Excitement is all around us but something is still missing from the cricket fraternity. Yes! Irreplaceable memory of Phillip Hughes still brought so many tears into our eyes. The tragic demise of the 25-year-old Aussie cricketer Phillip Hughes has saddened everyone.
It is just unimaginable for the whole Aussie team to realise that Hughes is no more. Yes the left handed talented batsman will never play cricket again. The unfortunate death of Hughes in November last year was more than earth-shattering news for the fans and fellow Australian cricketers as well. The Kangaroo team is currently playing their world cup at home and Hughes could have been a regular member had he been alive. However now we only have his memories.
Cricket is a hugely popular sport. It is played and enjoyed in commonwealth nations including India, Australia, South Africa and others. Cricket is meant for enjoyment and recreation, but sometimes it turns into fatal too. It is indeed very painful for a fan residing anywhere in the world to admit the truth that his favourite cricketer is out forever even before enjoying few more summers.
The unfortunate incident took place at a domestic match in Sydney ground in the late November, when a bouncer delivery off Sean Abbott proved fatal for Hughes. It was also a very shocking episode for the 22-year-old Aussie pacer and he needed a few days time to make up his mind to play again. The whole cricket fraternity stood beside him at that time and lent their support to him.
Phillip Hughes has played only 26 tests and 25 ODI matches. The batsman has amassed a total of 2300 plus runs, including both formats of the game. The talented southpaw scored 5 centuries in his short career and maintained a steady average of 34 in his career.
Cricket is considered to be a relatively safer game than Football, Rugby or WWE. However, cricket proved to be life threatening in certain cases too. Pakistan cricketer Zulfiqar Bhatti has also died due to an injury sustained to his chest while playing a short pitch delivery in 2013. The ball hit his chest and took his life.
Five cricketers have lost their lives while playing the game. The recent case of Phillip Hughes is on everyone’s mind, but it is not an isolated case. Pakistani cricketers Zulfiqar Bhatti and Abdul Aziz have died while playing cricket. Similarly, the cricketer Raman Lamba (India), George Smerz and Ayan Follay (English cricketers) have also lost their lives on the field.
No doubt, the untimely death of Philipp Hughes is a huge blow to the game of cricket. It is an irreplaceable loss to the game and can never be forgotten. The jersey number 64 has been retired in remembrance of this talented left handed batsman. The cricket fraternity will always miss this talented batsman on the field each time Australia comes out to bat. Each time you remember Hughes’s smiling face, tears will roll down on your cheeks. We are missing you Hughes in this Cricket World Cup.
