India’s debacle in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy has made it clear that the team certainly lacks depth in its bowling. A test win is impossible without the ability to take twenty wickets and all Indian bowlers have failed to do so throughout the Test series. At the end of the final test in Sydney, India lost the series 0-2 to Australia. After the devastating test series India slipped to number seventh position in test, but retain number two spot in ODIs as per the latest ICC rankings.
Now the question emerges “with such a pathetic bowling attack can India defend the upcoming World Cup”? This time the World Cup will be played in Australia and New Zealand and unless Indian bowlers do their jobs deftly than it would be very tough to say that India will even reach into the knock-out stage of the tournament once again. The spectacular cricket tournament will be starting from mid-February so the team has very less time to prepare well for the said event. However the upcoming tri-series will give ample opportunity to the players to showcase their talents on the foreign soils.
The fast bowlers including Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron and others bowl well in Indian pitches, but when it comes to foreign soil they continue with their poor form. In the recent test series Indian bowlers have completely failed to restrict Australia under 500 runs in each of the first innings of the four test matches. And this eventually laid the foundation for the victory of the Australian cricket team.
Legendary batsman Rahul Dravid opined that the series has been a disappointing one especially for the bowlers. It was shocking to see that the Indian fast bowlers performed miserably and could not even help the team win a single test match. Indian bowlers have never been able to bowl out the Aussie players even once in the recently concluded test-series. Undoubtedly India have the best batting order in present times but in order to win a big tournament either in ODI or Tests the team has to strengthen its bowling department.
Dravid seemed clueless on any permanent solution to India’s woeful bowling attack. Probably the fact of the matter is that most young cricketers want to become batsman and not a fast bowler or spinner. Even at the Ranji level cricket there is a dearth of good bowlers the former test captain explained.
It is pretty evident that the team has a wonderful combination of batsmen, but its bowling department is seriously worrisome. If the team really wants to win the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 then India will have to take each match of the forthcoming triangular series between Australia-England-India in a very serious manner. Final fifteen members of the World Cup have already been announced, hence it is expected that Dhoni and selectors will keep a close watch on the performance of each player.
