Prime Minister Narendra Modi is fully committed to improving the cause of sports in the North-East states of India. Manipur may soon get its first sports university in the capital Imphal as per the latest announcement made by the Prime Minister on his three-day visit to the North-East. Sports could do wonders for the development of the region and may enhance the employment opportunity.
Speaking to the media at the concluding ceremony of the Manipur Sangai Festival, Modi heavily stressed upon the fact that the sports infrastructure needs to be built in the region. Central Government had already sanctioned Rs. 60,000 crore in the union budget for building infrastructure in the seven sisters including Manipur.
Meanwhile Modi Government is also trying to revive the tourism sector in Manipur and the whole of the North-East states as well. Tourism is a labor intensive sector and gives high return with lesser investment. It benefits the lives of everyone starting from a small shop keeper to a tea-seller.
Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh is also hopeful of a closer and positive cooperation with the union government in the days ahead. Modi felt that the youth in the North-East has huge potential to carve a niche for themselves in sports and motivate the unifying spirit of the nation as well. Manipur is famous for being a home to some of the leading names in sports including Mary Kom, Dingko Singh, Gunabir Singh, Thoiba Singh and others.
Crossing all barriers of political calculations, the Congress government in the Manipur led by Ibobi Singh has sounded positively to the recent initiative by the Modi government to launch a sports university in Manipur. The central government has sanctioned Rs. 100 crore for the upcoming National Sports University in the state. Australia is also expected to contribute towards building up of the university.
Narendra Modi has also urged the youth of the region to shun the drug habit which is adversely affecting the social fabric in the seven sisters. “The Manipur youth have successfully brought so many laurels to the state, hence they must give up a drug habit for the betterment of their families and society”, said Modi.
The national sports university is a center-funded project and will be erected in the Thoubal district of Manipur. A total of around 443 acres of land would be required for the purpose. The process has already begun to acquire the land.
