Jalandhar, Sept 18, 2014: Jalandhar, the sports hub of Punjab and India, will witness another triple header, as the Wave World Kabaddi League sweeps through the city in the next series of matches at the Surjeet Singh Stadium from September 19 to 21.
A city renowned for its rich legacy in Indian sports, Jalandhar has produced numerous of generations of top class Indian sportspersons across different disciplines ranging from hockey to athletics to cricket. Now Jalandhar will see a thrilling display of the indigenous sport of Kabaddi which has seen a wave of popularity through the cities it has touched during the Wave WKL this season.
After six successful weekends in five different cities across two continents in spectacular venues like O2 Arena in London, LG Arena in Birmingham, the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi and Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana and Rajindra College, Bathinda, the matches arrive in Jalandhar, where they will be held at the Stadium named after India’s legendary hockey full back, Surjeet Singh.
The past five weeks of magic have shown that Wave WKL has been a huge success in each of the cities with both live audiences which have packed the stadia and on TV where the eyeballs and rating have surpassed all sports barring cricket.

Elaborating on the rich history of Jalandhar’ sports former India hockey and Padma Shri, Shri Pargat Singh, Commissioner, Wave WKL, who was born here and went through his early education at village school, said, “Jalandhar is very close to my heart. I feel proud to flag off the third weekend of the Punjab leg of Wave WKL from my hometown. Wave WKL is a huge platform for showcasing Kabaddi talent across the globe. When it comes to Jalandhar the excitement is doubled as the city has produced many superstars in the different field of sports. The crowd has been ecstatic and we have been getting inquiries about matches here for a long time. And, finally we are here for live action.”
Many of the Wave WKL’s star player hail from Jalandhar and neighbouring areas. They include:
- Talwinder Singh Grewal (Raider), Punjab Thunder: Amongst the top raiders of the league, Talwinder, popularly known as Tinda, is a marquee player of Wave World Kabaddi League. He not only embodies strength and great talent but also exemplary sportsman’s spirit.
- Kuljit Singh Malshian (Raider), Vancouver Lions- A Class raider, Kuljit Singh is sharp and agile. He has a wonderful success rate of raids.
On the occasion Mr. Raman Raheja, CEO, Wave WKL, said “Wave World Kabaddi League has been successful in establishing itself as an international sports brand as we have received encouraging TV reach in HSM of TAM and similar response in terms of social mentions as compared to other sporting leagues which took place in the past. Wave WKL matches have been scheduled be to played in five cities of Punjab, namely, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Jalandar, Mohali and Amritsar. The Punjab leg will have 30 matches spread across 5 weekends.
After the Punjab leg, Wave WKL will move to United States and Canada and then return to India once again for the final stages. The Wave WKL matches are broadcast live on Sony Six, the official broadcasting partner for the league in India.
