India celebrates its National Sports Day on 29th August, of every year. The day is celebrated in honor of the legendary hockey player, Mayor Dhyan Chand. The date resembles the birth anniversary of the Indian hockey player who had won six back to back gold medals at the Olympics for India. He is the only hockey player till date to receive the prestigious Padma Bhushan award and had also won three medals individual Olympic medals. His contribution towards Indian Sport is massive as he is regarded as the greatest and the most successful hockey player that India has ever seen. His tremendous skills in the game made India a very strong team in the world, probably the best during that time.
The day is a very prestigious one in the nation. Dhyan Chand’s lifetime achievements and his records are considered as the highest point in India’s sporting history. The day is celebrated by organizing friendly matches between different hockey teams at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi. The stadium was built in honor and respect of the icon. Prestigious awards like the Arjuna and Dronacharya award, Dhyan Chand award etc. are given to sportspersons and athletes who have contributed to the growth of sports throughout their careers, and also after their retirements. Famous players and athletes are given the opportunity to speak about sports in India and how to develop in different areas. Abhisekh Verma, have been chosen to be awarded the Arjuna Award for 2014 along with other athletes of India.
Many schools and academies also celebrate the day as their annual sports day and make the students aware of the achievements and contributions of the sporting heroes of India. A lot of functions and ceremonies are also held in the country on this day. On 29th August, Indian cricket team also takes on England in the second One Day International. The team will be looking to win the match on this iconic day and pay tribute to some of the Indian sports heroes on English soil. The National Sports day also resembles a rich history of Indian history in Sports. There are various other sports in the country which needs to be looked in for development. The corruption in sports is growing which should be checked and people should be made aware of the culture of the sport. Many sports like Hockey, Badminton, and Tennis etc. are losing recognition. The youth should also be encouraged to take up different sport as their careers. National Sports Day is a proud day in India, and we all should look to celebrate the day by contributing something to sports in our nation.
