Frank Lampard will be offered a one-year extension to his current contract according to reports today. The midfielder scored a stunning goal at Wembley last night as England beat Brazil 2-1, raising further questions over how Chelsea could allow the 34-year-old to leave when his contract expires at the end of the current campaign.
The 34-year-old has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent performers during a difficult season and supporters have urged owner Roman Abramovich to let him stay. Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson expects Lampard to reach 100 caps for England.
Lampard is currently the club’s second highest scorer and remains just five goals short of Bobby Tambling’s overall record of 202.Lampard has been in a rich vein of form in recent weeks, coming off the bench to curl in a fabulous winner for England at Wembley on Wednesday night on his 94th appearance for his country.
And despite his first-team action for Chelsea being reduced under interim boss Rafa Bentiez, Lampard has scored eight goals in his last 13 Chelsea appearances.
He said in an interview: “If I don’t get to 100 caps, I have given everything in every game I have played.Wherever I go, whatever happens in my career – and I don’t honestly know – if I can play at a great level of football and play at my best I will just see what happens. When you get older, you realise even more what it is to play for your country; that it won’t go on forever. Every time I am in and around the squad, I will give my all, whether it is starting or on the bench. I have got a lot of respect for the manager and I think he respects that I want to help in any way that I can.”
Lampard is just six games away from joining international team-mates Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard in the England centurion club.
