Former Indian Test Captain and the world’s third highest wicket taker Anil Kumble, has joined the Indian Premier League side Mumbai Indians for the position of their Chief Mentor ahead of the start of the 6th edition of the tournament.
The 42 year old, who is a highly respected cricketer, will replace South African all-rounder Shaun Pollock for this post. Pollock started his IPL career with the Mumbai team in 2008 but later went on to become their mentor but his contract with the team ended at the end of the last season.
Commenting on his appointment, Anil Kumble said, “In my discussion with Reliance Group Management, I find that they have a great and compelling vision for sports in this country, which aligns with my venture Tenvic Sports’ aspirations in making ‘sports’ as the main catalyst of youth development.
“Mumbai Indians is a very competitive team in the IPL with high profile players and committed owners. It’s my honour to join the Mumbai Indians as Chief Mentor and to align our joint interest in making sports as an important agenda in youth development. I look forward to the new assignment,” added Kumble.
Mrs. Nita Ambani, Mumbai Indians said, “In Anil Kumble, we have a new Chief Mentor who has extensive cricketing knowledge not only as a player of international stature but also as an able administrator. He is one of India’s leading sporting icons and we have great pleasure in having him on board.”
Kumble, earlier played a similar role at the Royal Challengers Bangalore and had even captained the side to the finals in 2009, and took them to the semis next year.
The leg spinner said, “I have had an enjoyable association with RCB, as player, captain and mentor. During this period we have achieved most of our objectives and RCB has emerged as one of the leading franchises in the IPL.”
RCB owner Mallya hailed Kumble saying, “Anil has been a great asset to RCB as captain, chief mentor and advisor. He has helped shape the entire team and was instrumental in creating a unique sense of passion and commitment.”
Mumbai Indians are yet to win the IPL though they won the Champions League in 2011 and are now hoping to build a formidable unit for the Pepsi IPL 2013 season.
