Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly looking for a new goalkeeper in Julio Cesar after reports suggest that the Scot has decided to replace David De Gea by the end of the season.
Ferguson has become increasingly concerned with the Spaniards inability to adjust to English football and his lack of progress in the past 18 months, despite acknowledging his ability as a superb shot-stopper. Reports say that the senior players have also lost faith in the 22 year old and this was way before he conceded a costly goal in extra time against Tottenham in a 1-1 draw.
De Gea moved to the Theatre of Dreams in 2011 for a fee of £ 18.9 million after excelling with Atletico Madrid. He is considered one of the best young goalkeepers today and has captained Spain’s U21 side and is deemed to be the next No.1 for his national side.
Ferguson is now looking for a more experienced goalkeeper to strengthen his defence and has turned to Queen Park Ranger’s Julio Cesar. The 33 year old has been in an outstanding form at Loftus Road and has also been recalled into the Brazilian National side by Coach Luiz Felipe Scolar for their friendly against England at Wembley next month.
The Brazilian had spent seven years at Inter Milan, winning 5 Serie A titles and the Champions League but had to quit as the club got him off the wage bill and then he joined The Hoops earlier this season.
The relegation hit QPR may also be interested in selling either Cesar or Robert Green, another goalkeeper they signed this summer. The club is facing a lack of funds and a deal here may ease off their wage bill.
However, Ferguson could face some serious competition from Arsenal as manager Arsene Wenger is battling his goalkeeper woes with Wojciech Szczesny and is also scouting Julio Cesar.
Manchester United has also been linked with Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas and Barcelona’s Victor Valdes. While the former has been in a tiff with boss Jose Mourinho the latter has refused to sign a new contract with his club. David de Gea has already been linked to a move back to the La Liga with either of these two clubs.
According to The Daily Mirror, The Red Devils may also be battling Manchester City to sign Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic, while The Daily Star links them with Liverpool’s Pepe Reina.
