Manchester United’s defensive woes may be over as centre back Nemanja Vidic is set to make a return for the Premier League match against Sunderland this weekend.
The Serbian has not played in the Premier League since September, and has been forced to undergo a knee surgery. The initial diagnosis suggested that Vidic might be out till next year. But the Serbian has made a quick recovery and was expected to play the match against City. Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t want to risk his 31 year old centre back due to the high intensity of the derby match. Sir Alex said “It would have been crazy to play him against City but against Sunderland”. A start in the derby looked unlikely.
Vidic has been the rock at the back for United, his presence brings a stability to United’s defence. His partnership with Rio has been phenomenal over the years. And as a captain he has held the team together.
United have certainly missed Vidic this season, the back full has been pretty inconsistent and have failed to maintain a clean sheet for most of the season. With Smalling and Phil Jones out with injuries too United were heavily dependent on the Ferdinand, Evans pair to perform. At times deployed Carrick in the centre back position. With Evans getting injured in the derby match against City, United fans were eagerly waiting for the Serbian to return. And as expected he is set to make his comeback against Sunderland this weekend.
With the return of their captain, United will be in an excellent shape at the back and will look to hold onto their 6 point advantage.
