Manchester United Striker Wayne Rooney could be out for “two to three weeks” after he sustained a knee injury. United boss Alex Ferguson said that the England International got injured while he was trying to hit a volley towards the end of a training session on Tuesday and had strained a ligament behind the knee.
Rooney missed the Red Devils’ 4-3 win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day and may miss the rest of the matches in the festive programme. Old Trafford will host West Bromwich Albion on Saturday and then play Wigan Athletic on January 1. Besides these, the 27-yr old may also miss the FA Cup tie against West Ham United on January 5 and is also doubtful for the Premier League match against fierce-rivals Liverpool on January 13.
Rooney was replaced by Mexican striker Javier Hernandez who scored a blinder in the 90th minute after the Magpies had taken the lead three times. Robin Van Persie also scored his 13th goal of the season to put Man United at a 7 point lead at the top of the points table.
Following Rooney’s poor performance against Swansea City on Sunday, the match against Newcastle was the perfect opportunity for him to bounce back. He has had a fitful season so far scoring seven goals in 14 appearances. He was also out for a month earlier this season after suffering a gash to his right leg against Fulham.
Meanwhile, forward Danny Welbeck and Winger Ashley Young were also missing from the line up against Newcastle along with defender Phil Jones. Although, Young is expected to be fit by Saturday for the match against West Brom. Captain Nemanja Vidic also took to the bench owing to a oreness in his knee after being out for so long as he played his last match in September.
