Robert Lewandowski is all set for his much awaited move to Old Trafford. The Poland international will double his earnings as a Manchester United player after a move to Old Trafford. He is said to have accepted an offer of £20.5million in wages to join the Premier League side in the summer. Borussia Dortmund have settled on an £18million fee for the Polish striker, who has been on Sir Alex Ferguson’s radar for quite some time now. The 24-year-old will sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford worth around £4.1m annually, as the striker’s contract with Dortmund expires at the end of next season. It is being said that he will double his wages with a move to the Premier League.
Lewandowski has been Dortmund’s most lethal attacking weapon and has found the net on a regular basis, but the Poland striker lags behind teammates Marco Reus and Mario Goetze on the pay scale which may be one of the reasons which has triggered a move to Old Trafford. Marco Reus and attacking midfielder Goetze, both get paid £3.28m a year, while Lewandowski is on an annual salary of just over £2m.Even Mario Goetze has been a United target for quite some time now. Dortmund are all set to lose their prized asset, it may go onto hurt them but with the arrival of Reus that looks more unlikely. Having lost Shingi Kagawa already to United, Dortmund might have hoped to hold onto the Polish forward.
Manager Joachim Watzke has been consistently stating that Dortmund are in no intention of selling the Polish forward and will keep him for the rest of his contract, even if it means losing him for nothing at the end of next season. It would have been a case of Lewandowski becoming a free agent. But the statement has been widely interpreted as a means of extracting the maximum amount from any buying club, after an acceptance that they will have to sell him in the summer. Certainly that has been a part of the Managerial tactics that Dortmund have used.
United already have one of the best attack’s in the Premier League. They have managed to score 48 goals from 19 games. But Ferguson, who watched Lewandowski play against Manchester City at the Etihad earlier this season, wanted the striker to be a part of his lethal combo which already includes some heavy weights like Rooney, Van Persie and Hernandez.
It was pretty evident from Berbatov’s move that Sir Alex Ferguson was looking for some quick legs, but Van Persie’s arrival made Lewandowski’s move just a rumour. But now it is pretty evident that the Scottish wizard wants the Polish striker at Old Trafford. He believes pairing Lewandowski with Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney operating from the Midfield United would have an edge. It is also said that Sir Alex was keen on reuniting him with his former teammate Shinji Kagawa, who formed a successful partnership before joining the Theatre of Dreams in the summer.
Lewandowski has scored 40 league goals in 83 games for Dortmund and has been in terrific form, netting the ball in each of his last three games for Dortmund. The Polish striker had a big hand in guiding Dortmund to the league title last season and has been a key performer for his side in the Champions League. Dortmund topped the group that saw some big names like Real Madrid, Ajax & Manchester City in the group stages of the Champions League and Lewandowski has been a major factor.
