Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from a scheduled exhibition match against Danish former World number 1 Caroline Wozniacki in Seoul, South Korea. This is another withdrawal after Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal already withdrew from playing their respective exhibition matches.
The French Open champion has complained of a sore collarbone which has led to a withdrawal from what would have been her opening match of the new season.
World number 2 Sharapova expressed regret on Facebook: “For everyone in Korea, I’m sorry I had to withdraw from my exhibition match. I woke up the other day with a neck pain and after doing a few test, the doctor wants me to take the next few days without any playing. So that leaves me to say I’m sorry not to be there in Seoul and play in front of my fans. I will make it up to you soon!”
World number 3 Serena Williams is another star who is fighting to get back on from a reported toe surgery. Serena too cancelled her exhibition match against Li Na of China and both would be heading straight to Australia now. The exhibition match was to be played in Thailand.
Serena and Sharapova are now scheduled to warm up before the season starting Australian Open at the Brisbane International, a WTA tournament beginning this weekend.
