Manchester United wonder boy Wayne Rooney is likely to miss the home match against West Bromwich to be played on 29th December after suffering a knee injury in training session. He may also have to sit out from United’s New Year fixtures or maybe more as his injury is still under examination.
The Reds striker was the most noted absentee during the United’s Boxing Day side that faced Newcastle United. However, without the service of key man Rooney The Reds won the blow-for-blow Boxing Day battle with Newcastle by 4-3 to move seven points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Barclays Premier League table, with the Blues losing 1-0 at Sunderland.
Rooney is expected to sit out the next few matches as well, according to his boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
“Wayne did it towards the end of training yesterday,” Sir Alex Ferguson apprised on MUTV.
“He was trying a volley when he strained a ligament behind the knee. He could be out for two to three weeks. It’s unfortunate because I thought after his performance on Sunday [at Swansea], he would have been brilliant today. You don’t get two performances from Wayne like the one he gave on Sunday. He was desperate to play but unfortunately we couldn’t risk him.”
The other key members of Sir Alex Ferguson’s missing out against the Magpies clash were striker Danny Welbeck, winger Ashley Young and center back Nemanja Vidic and Phil Jones.
“Danny Welbeck took ill in the team hotel last night and Ashley Young got injured in training also. Phil Jones got his injury at Swansea and we couldn’t risk Vida [Nemanja Vidic] after his first full game back. He had a little bit of soreness in his knee which is to be expected after being out so long. We’ve got other players out too so all in all, given the problems I had with team selection, the players were magnificent today.” Sir Alex explained.
There has been no word out on Welbeck’s illness or Young’s injury as yet. A further update on the injuries is expected when the manager holds his pre-match press conference on Friday.
Sir Alex is again likely to shuffle the pack in terms of team selection, especially with niggling injuries to contend with. Wayne Rooney is definitely out with a knee injury, while doubts remain over the fitness or availability of Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck, Rafael, Nemanja Vidic, Nani, Anderson and Shinji Kagawa, although the Japanese midfielder joined in the warm-up against Newcastle.
With the prominent members of the squad missing out due to fitness reasons the road ahead for The Reds will require a large amount of effort as they next play against West Bromwich, who have surprised everyone with their performance so far this season and are currently placed 6th in the standings on 29th December at Old Trafford, followed by New Year opener against Wigan Athletic away from home.
