The 25 year old Belgian is in red hot form and has been a nightmare to defences in Premier League. With 8 goals and 4 assists under his belt, Marouane Fellaini has managed to steer Everton into a Champions League qualification spot. With 23 points from 15 games so far Everton’s chances look bright, given that they hold on to the Belgian. With transfers round the corner, Everton might be forced into selling their priced possession.
Fellaini was signed by Everton in 2008 with a record signing fees of £12m. The Belgian midfielder arrived from Standard Liege on a 5 year deal, where he had managed to find the net only 11 times in 84 matches. He has been a regular starter for his national side from 2007. The Belgian developed a reputation as he made significant contribution to his national side, and well over 6 feet his physical presence added to his game.
His debut season at Everton was a success as he found the net as many as 9 times, but was booked often due to a lack of composure. Also he was named the Young Player of the Season by fans. His growth has been hampered by injuries then on, and at times lack of form. But David Moyes declared him the league’s best midfielder after a goal at Sunderland in December 2009.
In January 2010 he had an ankle injury that kept him out for the rest of the season. He made an impressive return only to be hit by a hamstring injury.
David Moyes hadn’t given up on his midfielder. Refreshed from the long break Fellaini returned for the 2011/12 campaign. Since then there has been no looking back. He has gone onto become an integral part of David Moyes side.
This season Fellaini has played in a much advanced role in the midfield just behind the striker, and the tactic has played off. The deft touches, amazing ball control, physical presence and the goal scoring nag have increased the market value of the Everton midfielder. Though he has signed a 5 year contract till 2016, his move to a European club looked certain with the European scouts all over him.
With all the big clubs in Europe and the English giants like Manchester United, City, Chelsea getting linked with him, the Belgian has clearly suggested he wants to stay at Everton. Having said “Although I am happy to be praised for my performances, my future is with Everton”, a transfer looks unlikely.
