The big fixture in the round of sixteen knockout phase was between Chelsea and Manchester United. The two teams had met earlier last weekend in a highly controversial match and this time Chelsea were looking for revenge.
The fixtures were divided between two days on the 30th and the 31st of October.
The first match of the round was between League One side Swindon Town and Premier League side Aston Villa. Villa were hoping to keep the momentum going from their last round win over Premier League Champions Manchester United. Villa took a 2-0 lead by the 39th minute courtesy to Benteke and Agbonlahor. Swindon equalized with a brace from Storey but a 90th minute winner from Benteke gave Villa the victory.
Wigan Ahlketic hosted League Two side Bradford City. The underdogs took the win in a penalty shootout after Maloney and Gomez failed to convert from the spot for Wigan and Bradford had converted all their shots.
Leeds United hosted Southampton in another fixture. Leeds had played brilliantly to eliminate Everton in the previous round and now they eliminated another Premier League side. Tonge, Diouf and Becchio scored the goals for Leeds.
It was a bad day for Premier League sides as another top flight team Sunderland lost to a lower league team. Sunderland lost to League One side Middlesbrough in lone goal match. McDonald scored the winner and the only goal in the 39th minute.
The fixture of day 1 in the round of 16 was between Arsenal and Reading. Reading took a 4-0 lead in the 39th minute before Arsenal inspired by Theo Walcott equalized late into the second half injury time to take the game to extra time. The match ended 7-5 in favor of Arsenal.
In the day 2 fixtures it was another upset for the big names in English football as both Tottenham and Liverpool were eliminated by two teams that were promoted last season. Norwich played Tottenham at home. Spurs took the lead through Bale but an inspired Norwich kept pushing to score two goals in the second half to give Norwich the win. In the other upset, Liverpool lost to Swansea City at home. Brendan Rodgers was facing his former side for the first time and had a very bad first visit from his ex. Swansea took a 2-0 lead before Suarez pulled one back. Liverpool kept pushing and in the end were caught out on a counter attack and conceded one more deep into the injury time to give the Swans a victory.
The match of the day was once again between the Blues and the Reds. Both teams had a very different team altogether on the field with the major first team players not even on the bench. United took the lead in the 22nd minute through veteran Giggs. David Luiz then equalized for the blues from the spot in the 31st minute. Just before half time Hernandez scored one again against Chelsea to give United the advantage. This was his 6th goal in 9 matches against Chelsea. Gary Cahill equalized in the 52nd minute before Nani gave United the lead once again. Chelsea desperately needing another goal to take the match into extra time bought in substitutes worth 75m. The pushed hard and won a penalty deep into the injury time. Eden Hazard stepped up for Chelsea and converted. In extras time Sturridge scored to give Chelsea the lead. Ramires doubled the lead in the 116th minute. Ryan Giggs pulled one back for United from the spot to make it 4-5.
This was probably the best match day for a league cup – Upsets, Goals, Comebacks and Controversies.
In the quarter final round Leeds United will host Chelsea, Swansea will host Middlesbrough, Norwich entertain Aston Villa and finally Bradford host Arsenal.
