The US Open women’s finals was a rigorous rally between the world’s two best players and right until the last few points of the game, it was hard to say which side the trophy would finally go to. But when she won, Serena Williams jumped up and grinned off the same grin she did when she won her first grand slam.
Both the world number 1, Victoria Azarenka and hot favorite Serena Williams were both battling bad for this. Azarenka was on her winning spree and Serena Williams had already seized the summer with her Olympics win, Wimbledon title and now the US Open for the fourth time.
“I honestly can’t believe I won. I really was preparing my runner-up speech, because I thought, ‘Man, she’s playing so great”, said Williams.
An ecstatic Williams was more shocked than satisfied while holding her beloved trophy. She admitted that her opponent gave her a tough fight and that she herself was ready to stand as a runners up at a point during the match. The match that went on for 2 hours and 18 minutes made it as the longest women’s match after 17 years. The last time there was a three-set game was back in 1995 at Paris.
Williams is a fighter. Being the first women, a decade ago, to win both the US Open and the Wimbledon, she has only made her game better with each another one. And returning after that life-threatening injury, she has made this the best comeback that the world of tennis has seen. Her opponents all through her return, the critics all know what a fighter she always has been and she only proves it right each time. And after the summer she has had, she surely will not have to answer the question about retirement any time soon.
23 year old Azarenka gave her best fight in the game and says that she will leave the court with no regrets. When it comes to the finals, there is little concern of which seed is playing which seed but more of who is playing whom.
Another remarkable finals, another remarkable win. Serena Williams is here to stay.
