Even the best of finals can become a little humdrum when the winner becomes predictable and sports has always had that fickle flair to it. Suddenly a newcomer takes entry and steals away the spotlight as he/she proudly beats the top ranker.
US Open – Ageless Finals
The situation here is a little different however. Serena Williams may be the top ranker but Victoria Azarenka is no newcomer. One is more experienced, has several titles to her name, is known for her aggressive play on court while the other is here to give a new side to cheer on. Victoria Azarenka says she is all set to take Williams down in the finals of the US Open.
Azarenka may be the world number one at the moment but she knows very well that Serena Williams occupied that spot not so long ago. Williams is a daunting player who has been playing exceptionally from the London Olympics and 23 year old Azarenka very well knows who she’s pit up against.
In their last games, Azareka beat Maria Sharapova with a game that ended 3-6 6-2 6-4 while Williams proved heavy on Sara Errani with a 6-1 6-2 score. Both played impressively, clawing their way into the finals and will now face each other at Flushing Meadows.
Serena agrees that this is the best summer she is having. And certainly so. She won her titles at the London Olympics, Wimbledon and with US Open on her to-do list, it just couldn’t get better.
“It will be up there because if you win the Olympics and Wimbledon and this, it would be kinda cool.”
Though the performance of the Belarusian has been consistently well, she knows who her opponent is and so does the world. When Serena Williams is in form, there is just no stopping her. She’s been in the game ever since her teen years and having won her first title when she was just 17, Serena has gotten used to winning. She took a break from the sport after she was diagnosed with a blood clot in her lungs but her comeback, unlike most, has been most successful and rewarding. She returned unseeded but win after win, she has reminded everyone of the place that she once occupied.
At the end of it, age doesn’t matter at all. It’s all about what you have right now.
