Heavyweights marched past their opponents in quarter finals to set up a big semi final clash.
Quarter final match no.1: Australia U19 172/5 defeated Bangladesh U19 171 by 5 wickets
Australia U19 continued their trend of bowling out their opponents and wobbling before doing enough in the chase to win the matches in the ongoing U19 world cup.
As often the case of team winning the toss and opting to chase, Australia U19 decided to bowl first. Rather surprisingly Bangladesh openers Das and Sarkar not only negotiated but also scored well against the new ball bowlers. Just when the host Australia seems to lost their grip with not so effective bowling and against determined batting, their fielding produced the breakthrough. Bancroft ran out Liton Das for 22 runs and Bangladesh lost their first wicket for 64 runs in the 14th over. They failed to capitalize on the good start with only two players apart from openers got into double figures. The wicket of Sarkar triggered the collapse as they went from 120/3 to 128/7. Australia U19 found their unlikely bowling hero in Travis Head who took 3 wickets in his 7 overs. Thanks to some tail contribution, Bangladesh U19 managed to reach 171 runs. Sarkar top scored with 73 off 80 balls.
In return, Australia U19 were off to a poor start. Within first 10 overs, they lost 4 wickets for just 33 runs on the board. Bangladesh U19 team breathed an unlikely upset but yet again Oz captain Bosisto was at his best. Bosisto along with Travis Head forged a match turning 5th wicket stand of 77 runs and revived Australia U19 team from 33-4 to 100-4. New ball bowler Taskin Ahmed came back to remove Head who looked in ominous touch for 44 off 49 balls. Bangladesh had a door to run through but Bosisto the man stood in front of it. Another solid unbeaten partnership of 72 runs for sixth wicket took Australia U19 into the semi finals of U19 world cup.
Captain Bosisto, the savior for Australia U19 team so far in this tournament, was rightly awarded the player of the match for his brilliant match winning unbeaten knock of 71 runs.
Quarter final match no.4: South Africa U19 244 defeated England U19 141 by 103 runs
South Africa U19 is certainly now the team to beat in the world cup with their impressive run of victories. Today is no different for them as they crushed past England U19 team. The mighty of this South African U19 team is that they made even the team of England U19 caliber look like a minnow.
After been asked to bat first, South Africa U19 onto their own despite losing the inform opener Kock for just 7 runs. Other inform player and captain Bowes continued his impressive run of form with an attacking knock of 46 from 54 balls. They looked in spot of bother at 82/3 but Bruyn and Coetzee erased any such doubts with a dominating 94 runs partnership. Though Bruyn fell for 54 runs in 38th over, Coetzee carried on and anchored the innings. England U19 made a late comeback to restrict South Africa U19 for 244. South Africa U19 lost their last 6 wickets for just 28 runs. For England, Topley took 3 wickets and topped the tournament bowling chart with 11 wickets.
England U19 lost their opener Bell-Drummond very early but Davies and Foakes steadied the run chase with a solid 100 runs 2nd wicket partnership. But the wicket of Foakes opened the gate for South African U19 team to make in roars. They just flooded the England U19 team who from 102/3 went down to 141 all out. Subrayen, who took 4 wickets for just 24 runs in his 10 overs is the architect for England U19 collapse and was rightly named as player of the match.
South Africa U19 will meet the host Australia U19 in the 1st semi final on August 21. Much to the contrast of pre-tournament predictions, South Africa is now the favourites to win the U19 world cup after their awesome performances on the field.
