When non-tennis players get the stomach flu or catch a stomach bug, they know that it’s the stomach flu or the stomach bug. But when Sharapova fell sick earlier this month, she doubted, questioned and then feared she was pregnant.
She pulled out from the Canadian Open at the time under the name of ‘illness’ but the thought that she may be pregnant did not pull out of her mind. During that time, Sharapova went through excruciating pain and after a certain point of time, she just couldn’t bear with it any longer. It was the discomfort and agony that compelled her to seek medical help. She had a blood test taken, and along with that an ultrasound. She just had to make sure.
The tests then told her that she had just contracted the stomach virus and that she was not pregnant. Sharapova is engaged to the former NBA player Sasha Vujacic. No wedding dates have been fixed for the two as of yet.
Sharapova’s reaction to the test results was quite out of the ordinary however. As soon as the doctors told her she was not pregnant, she demanded a refund of her money! She later remarked that her response was indeed unconventional.
“It was really weird. They told me I was fine, not pregnant. I’m like, Can I get my money back?”
Before taking an illness break from the Canadian Open as well as the Cincinnati Open, Sharapova had lost the match against Serena Williams in the London Olympics. She felt uneasy right before her match against Serena Williams in the finals but waited a while before getting the tests done.
“At the end of the day, I think it was some stomach bug. But I thought it was getting better. Then I started eating like the normal Maria and it wasn’t better.”
The year has been great for the Russian and perhaps the not-pregnant news made it even greater. She is happy to be back playing for now and now that her “illness” has gone, she can give all her concentration into the US Open. She has had a great start to her campaign but agrees that she can do better. She has a whole tournament to do that now!
