MC Mary Kom sweats continues to give sweet joy for Indians.
Athletics (Men’s Discuss Throw)
Vikas Gowda booked his place in men’s discuss throw final event at the London Olympics. Vikas threw 63.52m in his first attempt itself. In his second attempt, he threw 65.20m and automatically earned qualification for final. It was great that Vikas Gowda raised to occasion but he needs to outscore his best in finals. Although he is ranked at 5th overall in qualification round, final is a different story altogether.
The US based Indian Vikas must throw anything close or above 70m to stand a chance of winning a medal in Men’s Discuss throw at the London Olympics. There are atleast five players who have better season best throw than Vikas. So, its like others needs to under-perform as much as Vikas need to do outstandingly.
Boxing (Men’s Middleweight and Women’s Flyweight)
In men’s middleweight (75kg) category quarter final bout, India’s poster boy Vijender Singh suffered a heart breaking loss in the hands of Uzbek’s Abbos Atoev. Both Vijender Singh and Abbos Atoev started the bout cautiously as they shared the honours in 1st round 3-3. In second round, they opened up and started to attack little more but still held onto tactical boxing. Vijender lost the second round 5-7 as Abbos showed his class and experience. Vijender went desperate in third and final round to get more points but Abbos proved to be better on the day. Vijender again lost the round 5-7 and thus lost the bout 13-17. Vijender Singh bows out of the London Olympics bitterly without a medal but he gave his best honestly.
In women’s flyweight (51kg) category quarter final bout, Mary Kom ran through her opponent again at the London Olympics. The five time world champion Mary Kom played brilliantly and didn’t allowed her opponent to get any sort of momentum in the bout. Mary closely took the first (2-1) and second round (3-2). But in last two rounds, Mary showed her authority by winning them 6-1 and 4-2 respectively. Thus, Mary Kom defeated Tunisia’s Maroua Rahali 15-6 and qualified for semi finals. By qualifying for semis, Mary Kom is least assured of a bronze but will it satisfy her thirsty? No way.
Mary Kom faces the favourite and Great Britian’s Nicola Adams in semi finals. Nicola is the one who defeated Mary Kom in quarter finals at 2012 World Championship.
Shooting (Men’s Trap and 50m Rifle 3 Positions)
Manavajit Singh Sandhu failed to qualify for finals in men’s trap events at the London Olympics. Sandhu scored 119 out of 125 and finished at 16th position in the qualification round. Sandhu was expected to atleast qualify for finals but he fell short of the reaching the target by 3 points.
In 50m rifle 3 position event, it was disappointment as both the Indian players failed to even qualify for finals. London Olympics bronze medalist Gagan Narang finished at 20th with the score of 1164/1200 and Sanjeev Rajput at 26th with the score of 1161.
