And with that spectacular win, Roger Federer equals Pete Sampras’s record of holding 7 Wimbledon titles. Sunday’s match between Roger Federer and Andy Murray was the big finals that the whole of world was waiting with hats and umbrellas to see.
And conquering another win and another milestone, Federer is on his way to making his own records over chasing them.
The game ended with 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 and the win now ties with Sampras’s 1880 record of winning 7 of the big W titles. The center court was wet and dry throughout the match and the rain tried to put its own twist to things, but the cool never left Federer, or perhaps the nervousness never showed. This is now his 17th major title.
And now the number 1 position is back with the Swiss as he goes back home with the gleaming trophy and a standing ovation for a magnificent play. Of course, being Wimbledon, Andy Murray was the crowd favorite from the start although it was well anticipated that the finals would end in Federer’s favor.
The rain had its own game going. There was a slight interruption in between the game after which the match resumed. The roof came out in the third set and amidst the loud dancing rain, the game went on. While Federer returned with a relaxed composure, Murray seemed troubled. By this time, the match was on the side of the Swiss.
England was counting on Murray to end their 76-year drought of a champion in their All England’s Club and even though Murray tried, it fell short. He was highly enthused at the start of the game where he took advantage of his energy over a tired-looking Federer. He won the first set however right after that is where things took a turn back to Federer’s court.
And there isn’t just once title with Federer. He now equals the record of the amount of weeks as number 1. Along with that, he is now the third man over 30 to have won Wimbledon.
Amidst the 15000 crowd were the Duchess of Cambridge, her sister Pippa Middleton, Rod Laver, British Prime Minister David Cameron and the Beckhams. They must have all picked and prayed for their favorites but at the end of it all, everyone knew that it was the triumphant Roger Federer who deserved the victorious win.
