West Indies came long way in Sammy leadership but one thing that kept eluding them on their ride is a “winning streak”.
In the last three weeks of English summer, West Indies promised very much, infect even outplayed home team on more than few days but still not delivered enough to get awarded with a gold called win. It is a sad fact that in 12 out of last 16 test matches, West Indies had played till the fifth day of the match but in those 12 matches, they won just once, lost four times, drawn six times and tied once. But that is all without a superman called Chris Gayle in their arsenal.
Gayle is all set to return into West Indies color after been dropped with administration issues for over a year, will finally play his first match against England on Saturday. There is no better time for either WI to include a player like Gayle at top of the order or Gayle to rejuvenate and make a impact to a team that just finding difficult in crossing the final winning hurdle over and over again.
How much difference Chris Gayle can make to the already fighting West Indies team is a question unanswerable now but in his current form, we can expect him to turn the fighting spirit into a winning one for WI.
Just imagine how good a West Indies team batting can be with Chris Gayle, Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russell and Dwayne Smith in the team. While writing their name itself, i can feel the striking power in my hands. Add Ravi Rampaul, Darren Sammy and sensational Sunil Narine (Roach and Edwards are injured now) in the team. May be all those sufferings and hard work undergone by West Indies team under Sammy is for this moment. A moment where they will strike fear into the opponent ranks with their player names itself.
Although matches are not played in papers with just names and their potential, this West Indies is a serious threat in limited over cricket if proper XI is selected. Its a new kind of headache for WI team management where they may have to leave few stars out of the playing XI now in contrast to finding a good player to add in the XI. An occasional win is no more enough to show their raise in cricketing field atleast not in limited over cricket. A series win, a winning streak is what WI should aim hereafter.
As a cricket fan, we all hope that finally West Indies as a team come together in terms. Not only they will give excitement to all the viewers but they are also capable of pushing the bar of limited over standards in all three departments of cricket with their fire power.
Whether Gayle fires with bat or not, West Indies for once will feel confident in their top order. The players will gain new level of confidence with a class player like him in their back. And for first time this summer, England new ball bowlers will think thrice before bowling a ball to West Indies opener.
Get, set and ready to ride with this new dawn of West Indies! May the winning streak begins at Southampton.
