CSK got off to a flamboyant start with Muarli Vijay coming into action; they scored 50 runs in first five overs. Murali Vijay gave Chennai Super Kings a breezy start with 29-balls 41 runs. Misunderstanding between Vijay and Flessis created a chance for MI, which they grabbed. Soon, Vijay followed succumbing to an incoming ball from RP Singh. Then Raina and Bravo helped CSK to cross 100 run mark. Raina made 36 runs of 21 balls, which included 3 fours and 2 sixes. Raina got out to Franklin just when he was looking good. Dhoni didn’t waste much of the time, started hitting shots straight away.
CSK reached 150 mark at the start of 17thover, with Dhoni and Bravo looking to slog balls out of the ground. Bravo got out to a great yorker from Malinga, which uprooted the wickets, after hitting for two consecutive fours. Rohit Sharma took a stunner of catch to get Dhoni’s wicket. RP Singh got the wicket of Morkel to put CSK away from getting a score par 180. With Malinga’s last over, MI were sure of economical over from him. Malinga delivered by giving just 4 runs and 2 wickets, which meant they needed 174 runs to win.
Earlier, Harbhajan won toss for MI and choose to field first. MI brought in Dwayne Smith and RP Singh in place of Pragyan Ojha and Thisara Perera. CSK played with unchanged team.
Chasing, MI started with no runs in first over, Ben Hilfenhaus bowled a superb maiden over, which was the 18th maiden of this IPL. MI lost first wicket in third over, Franklin was under pressure and tried to hit above mid-on but got caught by Vijay. MI reached 50 runs at the end of six overs, with the partnership between Sachin and Rohit inching towards 50 runs.In 10 overs, MI was at 74 runs with 100 runs required from last 10 overs. Sachin and Rohit put an unbreakable partnership of 100 runs to get to 120 runs in 14 overs.
A karbon kamal catch by Faf du Plessis of Sachin Tendulkar who scored 73 runs; put the match in interesting position, MI needing 40 from 25 balls. Bravo got the wicket of Dinesh Karthik; Dhoni played a gamble by giving ball to Jadeja which proved correct with two wickets of Raydu and Rohit and just 4 runs. Match got interesting turn, although great innings by master Sachin and Rohit. With runout in 19th over, CSK inched towards the win. Harbhajan wanted to hit a six of Bravo but missed.
In last over, MI needed 16 runs. Malinga wickets were uprooted by Bin Hilfenhaus, in similar manner in which bowled Bravo. Dwayne Smith’s heroics got MI a win against CSK, who hit 14 runs of last 3 balls. MI team huddled on the ground to celebrate this fanatastic win. CSK now face the danger of getting out of Top 4 for the first time in IPL history.
