Wenger fought hard in the battle to pick four from the pack of cards on the final day of the transfer window after stubborn team performance against Manchester United on last Sunday.
On Wednesday, August 31st everyone in EPL knew there will be one man who is going to race around the transfer market faster than anyone in the league to clinch the day. As expected by everyone it turned out to be Arsene Wenger, manager of Arsenal.
Wenger who failed to land any first team players for the past 61 days of transfer window somehow managed to sign four players who can readily expect to play for Arsenal. Wenger owed for an experienced defender and midfielder to inject some leadership in the team for guiding the puzzled youngsters on the field. He went flat out on German international Per Mertesacker and managed to lure Mikel Arteta with Champions League football from Everton to succeed in his effort to sign an experienced defender and midfielder respectively. Along with this, Wenger signed Brazilian Andre Santos and Yossi Benayoun to fill the void left by Clichy and Nasri respectively.
Wenger spilled £24million in a single day to strengthen his side that was surrounded with injuries and desire for trophies. In all fairness, Wenger gave lots of joy to all the fans of Arsenal on Wednesday by finally signing good players rather than promising youngsters. Arsenal fans will now feel rejuvenated as they go out to watch Arsenal team on the next match with an expectation of much better performance. But still the question marks remains over on the goal scoring ability of Arsenal with their midfielders combined to score more goals than their strikers in the last two seasons.
Mikel Arteta stole the show on the transfer day as he was signed minutes before the deadline after the deal fallout earlier on the day. Then in all of a sudden, Arteta himself pushed the transfer to go through towards the end of the day by taking wage cut of £10,000/week with the chance to test him at the stage of Champions league football. Arsenal looks very solid on paper now with Vermaelen and Mertesacker on back and Arteta and Benayoun at the center to provide stability for the team.
As Nasri told earlier this week, it’s not Wenger who reluctant to buy the players its Arsenal board who tied the hands of Wenger after moving to Emirates Stadium. With loan debit ending on next summer, fans can expect more good players coming to Arsenal finally ending their hunt for trophies but for that they need to ensure top 4 finish in the league which itself will be uphill task considering the strength of other teams this season and worst start to their season.
With all done and dusted, there will be question on minds of many that if four is possible on a single day, then why it’s not possible for the whole of past 61 days.
