Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard, whose return to football action is imminent, has hailed team-mate Luis Suarez and tipped the Uruguayan to become one of Anfield’s legends, while joining the elite club of Liverpool’s special No. 7’s.
Gerrard, who has now returned to Melwood for full training, was recently talking to LFC TV. When quizzed about the possibility of Suarez becoming an Anfield legend, Stevie G said, “I don’t see why not. He’s still young enough and I’m sure he’s going to get even better than he is now, which is a scary thought.
“He’s got the appetite for the game to learn and get better. Hopefully he will go on here for a long time because he’s certainly got a massive part to play at this club in the future – the history is there to be written.”
Gerrard’s comments are not surprising at all, because Suarez has played brilliantly so far this season, while continuing his good form from the Copa America. The 24-year-old former Ajax forward has bagged goals against Sunderland & Arsenal, besides one goal in the Carling Cup. And he has been the best player in the Red jersey so far this season.
Gerrard added, as he continued to praise the Copa America winner, “He’s a very enthusiastic footballer and very intelligent. He’s like a kid in the street and he can’t wait to get out for training and games.
“Alongside Dirk [Kuyt] of late, they’ve been like two Duracell bunnies. They just don’t stop and for defenders that must be a nightmare, knowing when you control the ball those two will be chasing.
“It’s fantastic to have him and hopefully he can continue his form until the end of the season. If he does, it will give us a much better chance of getting some silverware.”
As Gerrard will return after a long time on the sidelines, it is quite obvious that he will lack match fitness in the next few weeks. And there is bound to be a lot of competition for places in the centre of midfield, despite Liverpool managing to clear out a lot of players from that area like Joe Cole, Alberto Aquilani and Raul Meireles.
Being aware of this fact, Gerrard said, “We’re looking stronger. The competition in each position is fantastic. We’ve near enough got two top players in each position, so there is going to be a big fight on for places.”
