Sports’ Violent Side

Sport spews” are nothing new to news, only the kind is. Just recently, we heard of the Pakistani coach swearing and cursing in the Asian Hockey Championship where India gifted silver to their rivals, Pakistan. And now, after the US Open came to a finish with Sam Stosur winning the Women’s singles, there was more of hate discharges by her opponent Serena Williams.

Sports’ violent side

The outrage came after, Serena let out a “C’mon!” right after her serve where she thought she saved a second break however the ball had not yet reached Stosur’s court and according to the rules, this was a violation.

Serena just managed to avoid a ban from her outburst where she used words like “hater”, “out of control” and “unattractive inside” for the chair empire Eva Asderaki and when the game finished, walked away without shaking the umpire’s hand. Serena was given a code violation for her outbreak but nevertheless she refused to apologize after the match. When asked about the flare-up, she said that it didn’t matter and that she did not even remember what she had said to the empire. Showing little seriousness to the issue, Serena Williams said “I guess I’ll watch it on youtube”.

Ethics: it applies in workplaces, social events, other professions, and most certainly it applies in sports. So after so many years of being a tennis star, of grabbing 13 grand slams and US Open titles, of being no. 1 in the sport that gives her recognition, what does it all come down to?

Surely, this news comes with familiarity for Serena Williams. In a tournament in 2009, Serena faced a fine after a similar incident took place against her semi-finals with Kim Clijsters. Serena was fined $2000 for the offence then.

On another side, Gabriel Tamas, West Brom defender, is also charged with violent conduct on field after he elbowed Norwich striker James Vaughan. Vaughan visited a plastic surgeon right away after the incident and the damage is suspected to be a bad one. Tamas has one day to respond to the charge, to which he agrees to will lead to a 3-match ban.

Paul Lambert, Norwich boss, said that the injury was serious and his player and that it went straight to the lip. West Brom side is busy tweeting and commenting that the incident was intentional meanwhile.

Without doubt each point is as crucial as the first and each match, more deadly than the last however this comes as no leeway for arrogant behavior on court or the field, of any sport one plays.
