Samir Nasri Defends Wenger; Slams Gunners’ Transfer Policy

Manchester City’s new signing Samir Nasri, who was recently brought in from Arsenal, has openly criticized the transfer policy of his former club, citing it as the main reason for him to make the tough decision to move on from the London club.

Samir Nasri defends Wenger; slams Gunners’ transfer policy

France International Nasri was being chased by Roberto Mancini & co. for a long time this summer and finally, the deal was done last week for a transfer fee of around £25 million. That may have increased the transfer kitty for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, but the long-term Gunners’ manager has very little time left to fill the void being created by the recent departures.

Though 24-year-old Nasri did not criticize Wenger, he felt that the French manager was less influential in holding on to his big players. He said that the transfer policy itself has left Wenger helpless.

Talking to France Football, he said, “Arsenal are a great club. But (after) building the Emirates Stadium its financing has changed quite a bit. It has changed the ambitions for the moment.

“But it is not Arsene Wenger. It is the policy of the club leaders. Arsenal no longer have the same resources. He (Wenger) cannot make the same moves as before the transfer market. Rather, he is obliged to sell its best players and bet on the young.”

He added further, “There are signals that do not lie. The departure of Fabregas to Barcelona is one. Our end to last season was another challenge. The defeat against Birmingham in the final of the League Cup was also very hard in the head. Coming to Manchester City, I chose a club in an upward spiral.”

Putting light on his times at Arsenal, the Frenchman added, “I do not regret going through Arsenal. I learned a lot there, tasted the highest level, with a very high level of expectation. When I arrived, there was also a great competition and I managed to impose myself. It was a fantastic life experience. I learned about myself.

“I am more (of a) scorer than in the past. I progressed defensively. I owe a lot to Arsenal and especially Arsene Wenger. Both have given me recognition in England and a new exhibit at the international level.”
