Fast bowler Mohammad Aamir, Mazhar Majeed, former captain Salman Butt and medium fast bowler Mohammad Asif were accused in the case of spot-fixing to last year’s Lord’s Test, out of which the first two have admitted to their involvement in England’s court on Friday however the other two players still deny that they had any role to play.
Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif say that they are innocent in the case. There has been no evidence of Butt and Asif exchanging any documents or statements with Majeed, an England-based agent.
The issue was first brought up by the popular and now closed “News of the World” tabloid and it spread like fire across nations. After this, Aamir was advised to nod his agreement that would bring some relief from the issue and divert the media away. He, however, did not do so at the time.
This happened during the fourth test against England in Lord’s last year where the British tabloids brought out this whole issue right when it happened.
In court on Friday, there were many people who were shocked to find out that Aamir had confessed to his involvement as he had been standing claiming to innocent all this while. He perhaps was waiting for the dust to settle as it has been over a year since the incident happened and the confession happened last Friday. The other two: Asif and Butt however still claim that they have nothing to do with the case and there has been no evidence found against them till now.
The players were under the impression that any change in statement would lead them to a life ban. This happened with a former Pakistani player, Ata-ur-Rehman, in the year 1999 where he changed his statements leading him to a life ban.
Until now the ban on Butt, Asif and Aamir was of 10, 7, and 5 years respectively. In the sports world, this would have come with the same amount of damage as a life ban as these players already were playing in their high tides.
The complete investigation is still to go on in the court and the results are to come.
Meanwhile, there are several former crickets, fans and supporters who say that Aamir should be given leeway as he has given exceptional performances for the team. Others argue that talent is swarming in the country and any wrongdoer should be treated as a wrongdoer.
For now, the decision is pending and an incomplete case hanging in the files of the Scotland Yard.
