Manchester United forward Michael Owen has spoken about his happiness after scoring two goals for his team in the Carling Cup against Leeds United, which was his first game for the Red Devils this season.
United defeated old rivals Leeds by 3-0 as Ryan Giggs added a goal to Owen’s double brace. The game saw Sir Alex Ferguson field a totally different line-up, with defender Zeki Fryers making his debut and midfielder Michael Carrick in the other centre-back position.
In the post match interview to Sky Sports, former Liverpool striker Owen said, “The first half was pretty good, we passed it around really well and made it tough for them.
“The second half wasn’t so good. We were obviously trying to keep possession and wear them down a bit and obviously we lost a man and we didn’t have any subs.”
The striker was understandably delighted to get his name on the scoresheet as he grabbed two goals with very different finishes, but he was also pleased with his overall contribution.
While explaining how he felt about the goals he scored in the first opportunity given by Alex Ferguson, he said, “One was a bit of mishit and one as sweet as I hit them, so quite contrasting. It’s always nice to score, that’s what my game has been about over the years, but you also try to contribute in other areas. I was pleased with the goals.
“I’m trying to be an example to young kids and help them through if needs be. At 31, I obviously have a few years left in me but there are different roles you have throughout your career and at the moment I’m doing that.”
Owen sent out a reminder to all the Premier League strikers stating that, when a chance is given to you, you need to prove what you are to the manager, failing which you may have to sit out or warm the bench for months.
Owen continued: “The pressure’s on before the game in many ways. You don’t get many chances so when you do you have to perform or otherwise it’s going to be a couple of months before you see a pitch again.
“So it’s nice to prove to yourself and everyone that you can still contribute and play well.
“We’re coming into a good part of the season now. The games are coming thick fast so hopefully the games will be shared out a bit.”
