Israel is now being groomed to become an international sports destination. There are several competitions, events and tournaments that are in waiting to be hosted at Eilat, Israel’s southernmost region the rest of this year and the next.
The ministry of tourism made an announcement yesterday that they are working closely with the municipality of Eilat in promoting sports in the country.
For starters, there is the European U23 Triathlon Championships which will take place from October 27 till the 29 for ages 18-23. This will be first of the many events that are going to be hosted in the venue. After that, there will be a formula race in the first few weeks to December for both men and women. This will be the first of its kind and will be held on a special track. The formula races will then continue in the same region for the coming decade even after the December race.
December 30th will have an International Desert Half Marathon. This will be in spirits of fun for visitors and tourists who will participate in the Red Desert behind Eilat. This will be followed by a new year’s party to give the event and 2011 a grand closing.
2012 has exciting events planned out as well. January 20-22 will have the Israman Competition, Israel’s Ironman event. Israman has three challenging events incorporated in it. This competition is held in 22 countries and is seen to be one of the most difficult triathlons there is. It will go on for 10-16 hours and will include: 4 km swimming, 180 cycling, and a full marathon of 42 km.
February will have the Women’s Tennis Federation Cup. This will be the second year that Israel is having the tournament but will be the first time that a country will be allowed to hold two internationals tennis events in the same year.
The end of February will have Israel’s Mountain bike marathon. The riders will have three tracks in which they will compete, with various terrains, levels and night runs.
The major triathlon event, The European Triathlon Championship, will be held in April. There are anticipated to be thousands of participants for the event from the country and around the world. 2012 will also have U20 World Weightlifting Championships, International Academic Sports Association Championship, and European Chess Championship. More events will be announced by the ministry of tourism as the dates are fixed.
Israel is sure to be swarming with tourism, visitors and now sportspersons all at the same time. Eilat is the venue to be!
