Wise people learn from their mistakes but wiser people learn from others mistake. Australian cricket team certainly learnt both from theirs and others mistakes.
After 6 month long Argus review is done, Australian cricket team is undergoing changes upside down. From the moment report was released publicly, Cricket Australia is quick in reacting to the recommendations made by the Argus team that included players like Steve Waugh and Mark Taylor which reviewed the Australian team downfall and their performances in Ashes series lose earlier this year.
Firstly Greg Chappell was removed from the chief selector position along with others, than the bowling coach was sacked along with fielding coach and now the Australian team Coach Tim Nelson stepped down from the job. Earlier Michael Clarke is appointed as full time captain in both test and ODI after Ricky Pointing was sacked and he was also given the right to have his say in the team selection process. It is to be noted that Clarke is the first captain to be given that power by the Cricket Australia. The Argus report actually made Tim Nelson as one of the key reason for Australia downfall. It explained the structure of Australian cricket is incapable in identifying good talents and nurturing them. Also the Australian coach Tim Nelson is more reactive than proactive in his coaching style during his 4 years tenure. Even though Nelson himself stepped down, his case in reapplying for post is not strong enough.
Australia may be for first time will have a foreign coach for their national with and Arthur is front runner for the post if Langer is over looked. Australian team yet again bettered others in their approach by making the report public and also reviewing their structure to stop from experiencing downfall like West Indies after dominating the cricket for long time. Australia learnt the importance of giving youngsters more chance, captain having more power in selection to have better team confidence and a coach who can work on the player’s talent more than with machines for tracking defects.
Having learnt from own mistakes and also from West Indies mistake, Australia surely won’t suffer downfall in their current transition period hereafter. After finishing dominating series win against Srilanka, Australian team now look good for challenges ahead of them. The next month South Africa tour will be very important to their process. Even if they lose the series, the performance on the field is a key for determining their success in future.
Australia yet again set the example for other teams to follow. It is nothing wrong for other cricketing boards like BCCI and PCB in giving a read about CA methods especially if it improves their team standards.
