Former Newcastle United legend & Blackburn Rovers striker Alan Shearer has spoken out in support of Kenny Dalglish, quoting the Scot as the ‘one guy that will get the best out of Andy Carroll.’
Prior to this, Dalglish had himself spoken in support of his towering striker, after Carroll made it to the headlines of major newspapers following his criticism by England manager Fabio Capello. Carroll did not start in the two recent Euro 2012 qualifiers for England, the reason for which being the lack of fitness of the 6’3” man. And Capello, as before, did make a point towards the Liverpool striker’s drinking habit.
In an interview to Goal.com, Shearer explained, “If there is one guy that will get the best out of Andy Carroll it will be Kenny Dalglish and I know that from my own personal experience when I worked under him at Blackburn.
“Whether you are scoring goals for fun or whether you are having a tough time in front of goal Kenny will not change. Kenny will be able to pass on all the experience and know-how that he has gained as a player and as a manager. He will be a great help to Andy.”
Shearer has played under Kenny Dalglish at Blackburn, when the Rovers clinched the Premier League title in the 1995 season. And, as he knows Carroll from his experience at Newcastle during his short stay there as caretaker manager, Shearer thinks that Liverpool’s £35 million signing will develop well under Dalglish.
He added, “Andy is at a great football club and he is working under a great manager in Kenny Dalglish. He hasn’t had the best of starts to this season for whatever reason but ability-wise he will never lose what he has got and I am sure he will come well again.
“I used to sit and listen to guys give me advice, particularly through the media, so I would hate for him to think that I would be sat here publicly giving him advice so I won’t start now.
“But what I can say is that confidence in football is the biggest thing and once he gets up and running then he will be fine. I have no doubt about that.
“First he must fight to regain his first-team place and then start playing on a regular basis to get back his sharpness and match fitness and it is then that Liverpool will see the best of him.”
